UW System to Offer “Flexible” Learning Options
Starting next fall, working adults will be able to earn degrees online, at their own pace, in nursing, diagnostic imaging and information technology from UW-Milwaukee.
They’re the first degrees offered under a new University of Wisconsin System effort, announced with Gov. Scott Walker in June, to make college more accessible and affordable to state residents.
The new degrees include: degrees that will allow registered nurses to earn a bachelor’s or master’s degree in the field, bachelor’s degree completion program in diagnostic imaging, a bachelor’s degree in information science and technology and certificate in professional and technical communication
The goal is to make it cheaper and easier to earn a degree, particularly for the roughly 700,000 Wisconsin adults who have some college credits and want to advance in their career, but don’t want to take classes on a physical campus.
“In June, we announced with Gov. Walker our intention to pursue this bold new model,” said UW System President Kevin Reilly in a statement. “Today, our faculty is stepping forward to embrace that opportunity.”
The online course offerings would come from the UW System’s current courses as well as other free online educational resources created at other universities around the world.
