Portage County Looking for B-Ped Committee Volunteers
by Donnelly Clare
Planning and zoning officials are looking for volunteers to join committees that will help form the new bicycle/pedestrian (B-Ped) path for Portage County.
Using state grant funds, county officials say they are finally ready to begin the planning phase for a county- wide network of pathways to accommodate “non- vehicular” travel, which will also encompass the Safe Routes to School program for both rural and urban residents.
“We’re hoping volunteers can fill these committees and provide lots of insight for the project,” said Sarah Wallace from Portage County Planning & Zoning.
Wallace added community members could best inform consultants and engineers associated with the project on what specific needs for B-Ped are.
County leaders are looking to create two separate committees; one to handle the creation of the rural B-Ped network, and another to deal with its urban counterpart. Committees are expected to meet roughly half a dozen times over the next 12- 18 months.
“The project will take a while to complete, but this could be a really neat destination for tourism,” said County Executive Patty Dreier.
“This could also facilitate safe routes to school for children of all ages and abilities, as well as their families, and it would be another avenue for residents looking to stay fit and healthy,” Dreier added.
To volunteer to serve on a committee, or be a part of a focus group that looks at specific issues, you will need to fill out a Volunteer Form, available here.
of the Portage County web-site (see web address below).
Other community-wide op-portunities for public in-volvement in the project – online surveys and interac-tive mapping, public infor-mation meetings – will be available over the upcoming year. Please check the P&Z webpage for more updates!
