Response From Public School Superintendent
|Dear District Community,
As you may already know, a tragic event took place this morning at approximately 9:00 a.m. EST in Newtown Connecticut. A gunman entered Sandy Hook Elementary School and 26 students and staff were killed. Student ages ranged between 5 and 10 years old. There are no words possible to describe this horrific situation. Our hearts and our prayers go out to the students, staff, parents, and community of Newtown, Connecticut.
When the time is appropriate, the District will reach out to the school and district in Connecticut and determine how best we can support them in this very difficult time.
This summer and fall, the District Safety and Security Team has been actively updating our Emergency Management Plan as a result of a week-long FEMA training that it received in the spring. Principals have been actively working to develop and implement the Emergency Operation Plans for their schools. We are fortunate to have a Safety and Security Team and staff that know the importance of having such plans in place.
Once again, let us all keep the students, staff, parents, and community of Newtown, Connecticut in our most sincere and deep prayers this day.
With a saddened heart,
Attila J. Weninger, Ph.D.
