Eva Mae (Cann) Regnier age 88, of Stevens Point passed away December 27, 2012 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield, following health issues in recent months. A Funeral Mass for Eva Mae will be held at 4 PM on Tuesday, January 1, 2013 at St. Joseph’s Convent Chapel, Stevens Point. Rev. Thomas Lindner of Newman University Catholic Parish will preside. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 pm at the Convent Chapel. A private burial will follow at a later time in the McDill Cemetery in Whiting. Shuda Funeral Service is assisting the family.
Eva Mae was born June 11, 1924 in Bemidji, MN to Harry and Lydia (Sorenson) Cann. She graduated from Bemidji State Teachers’ College in 1945. After her college years she taught high school in Minnesota. Eva Mae was joined in marriage to John E. Regnier, on June 24, 1950. The couple settled in Bloomington, MN until 1963 when they moved to Stevens Point, WI. Eva Mae worked as an elementary school teacher for the Stevens Point Public Schools from 1969 to 1984. While busy teaching and raising her young family, she also attended UWSP to earn her master’s degree in elementary education in 1974. She touched the hearts and minds of many young children during her teaching career. She and John retired in 1984. In retirement they enjoyed their love of travel, both domestic and foreign.
Over the years, Eva Mae and John have been active in many community programs. With their involvement in the UWSP Foreign Student Host Family Program, they have hosted 29 different foreign students over the years. Eva Mae has also been very active in the Newman University Parish. In addition, she has worked extensively with the Portage County Department of Aging at Lincoln Center, founding the “Get to the Point” lecture series for seniors.
Eva Mae is survived by her husband, John, her six children: Gregory (Mari) Regnier, Chicago; Judi (Mike) Jorgensen, Mansfield, TX; Elizabeth (Brad) Webb, Wylie, TX; Paula (Dave) Foley, Monticello, MN; Steven (Jeanne) Regnier, Plover; Carol (Dick) Okray, Plover and 11 grandchildren, Katie (Jim), Sam, Stacy, Xerxes, Jared, Jeremy, Hannah, Justin, Max, Bethany, and Lydia. She is survived by her brother, Douglas (Lois) Cann, Bemidji, MN and her sister-in-law, Virginia Cann, International Falls, MN. She was preceded in death by her brother, Don, her eldest child Douglas (1964) and her youngest child Christopher (1965).
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Regnier Family Scholarship Fund at the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point to benefit university students studying abroad or Newman University Catholic Parish.
Eva Mae’s family would like to thank the tremendously thoughtful and conscientious staffs at Ministry Medical Center in Stevens Point and St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield who have helped care for her.
Eva Mae will be sadly missed by her loving husband, children, grandchildren, and all those whose lives she has touched.
