Boehner Reelected as U.S. Speaker of House
The House of Representatives has reelected John Boehner (R-Ohio) as its Speaker.
The 113th Congress convened at noon Eastern Time on Thursday with 433 members-elect and kicked off by the Speaker vote.
The individual public voice vote took roughly an hour, and maintained a close degree of separation between the surrounded John Boehner and Nancy Pelosi (D-California) throughout.
While Boehner won the majority 220-192, 14 votes were cast for other individuals, including one for former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell.
There are 84 freshmen in the 113th Congress, 35 Republicans (32 men, 3 women) and 49 Democrats (33 men, 16 women). This year’s Freshman class includes the first Hindu elected to Congress, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii), and the first openly bisexual person elected to Congress, Rep. Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.).
Speaker Boehner swore in the 233 Republican and 200 Democrat members following his election to Speaker of the House.
