Stevens Point officials approved a measure Monday to review the city’s management pay plans.
The last review of salaried management staff pay scale and grades took place in 2008 and city leaders say they want to make sure Stevens Point employees are being compensated competitively, but also reflective of their duties.
“We have had several positions that have changed demonstrably in terms of job duties since this (pay plan) was first adopted,” said Mayor Andrew Halverson, adding he could think of “five or six” positions that fit the bill.
Aldermen Jerry Moore and Mike Phillips asked for a review of those few positions instead of a city-wide review, which could save the city from spending the estimated $15k- $30k for a human resources consulting firm.
“I would think this could be done internally instead of spending that money,” said Phillips.
Halverson said an objective view was necessary for the review, and an across- the- board look could streamline various departments because employees would need to fill out respective job duty questionnaires.
“They need to be honest, they need to use those questionnaires to be as direct as possible as to exactly what they do. Some people are paid very well and may not move at all. Some are overpaid,” Halverson said.
The measure comes before the Common Council Monday.
