Officials from the Department of Natural Resources have called for a temporary stop to the refilling of McDill Pond.
The refill started after two years of a dry lake bed thanks to a faulty dam. The refill came to a grinding halt when nesting geese were located on the lake bed, and after only two inches of water was returned to the pond.
DNR officials say they now have to await word from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Department to determine if they need a federal permit to continue the refill.
An emergency drawdown of the pond took place after the dam began leaking in June of 2011. Portage County officials say they have been unable to determine which party was responsible for approving the final inspection of the dam construction in 2001.
