In honor of Older Americans Month in May, Lincoln Center, the Aging & Disability Resource Center’s Senior Center sponsored an essay contest for Portage County sixth graders. Participating students wrote an essay on “My Grandparent” or “My Best Older Friend.”
The contest was an opportunity to increase intergenerational understanding and respect. A group of older volunteers judged the submissions on the strong attachment between old and young, originality, organization and cohesion, sixth grade level work, grammar, and spelling. The judges were Norm Swenson, Carole Liston, and Judy Somers.
All students who entered the contest received a participation certificate, and along with their teachers also received an ice cream cone coupon sponsored by Culver’s of Stevens Point. The winning essays were by Whitney Spaulding from Madison Elementary School whose teacher is Mrs. Crosby and Austin Stankowski from Bannach Elementary School, whose teacher is Mrs. Johnson.
Both top winners won a $25.00 Portage County gift certificate, sponsored by Anchor Bank and U.S Bank. They read their essays at the May Commission on Aging/Aging & Disability Resource Center Board meeting.
