Local Students Win Music Achievement Award
For the City-Times
Fourteen Stevens Point Area students from the studio of Gail Heywood are the 2013 recipients of the Music Teachers National Association Music Achievement Award, a term-long program sponsored by MTNA.
The program is designed to help encourage the students in the teacher’s studio to continue their music study and to strive to achieve goals that will help them not only become better musicians but that will enhance their love for and appreciation of music. The goals included community service projects, advanced music history study, learning pieces from different historical style periods, attending a local fine arts concert, composing a piece of music, conducting research on music history, and fulfilling their personal practice goal objective. The student/teacher/parent triangle helped to motivate and encourage the student to complete their objectives.
“I was overwhelmed by the energy and enthusiasm the students had to complete their goals. Several children volunteered their time to play for services at their school, senior citizen center or church. Some also provided entertainment while raising money for charity. It is inspirational to see these young musicians are using their time, talents and treasures with others.” Heywood said.
Heywood established goals for student participants at the beginning of the music term. The following students are the 2013 recipient of the MTNA Music Achievement Award: Alana Caldwell, Julia Caldwell, Matthew Caldwell, Elizabeth Cisewski, Katy Czerwinski, Josh Davis, Matt Davis, Kalyn Ford, Lexi Ford, Daniel Lindner, Gabrielle Sroda, Mara Steinweber, Bryn Swiston, Ella Swiston.
The students were recognized for their accomplishments by being awarded the official Music Teachers National Association Achievement Award pin recently at an awards ceremony presented by Gail Heywood.
