Wisconsin Soldier to Receive Silver Star
For the City-Times
An Arbor Vitae soldier is slated to receive the Silver Star.
1st Sgt. Gregory Fulton will be the first member of the Wisconsin Army National Guard to receive the award, the third- highest military decoration for valor.
Fulton will receive his medal during a formal ceremony Friday at Volk Field in Camp Douglas.
Sgt. Fulton served in Afghanistan as a combat engineer for nine months. In August of 2009 Fulton and his platoon worked with Afghan forces to clear a building in Pol-e Alam that was filled with insurgents. After clearing four floors, the group realized an open stairwell separated them from enemy combatants on the fifth floor.
Fulton attached an explosive to the stairwell and detonated it, preventing a firefight and saving lives.
The Silver Star Medal is awarded for gallantry in action against an enemy of the U.S.
