Wis. Meatpackers Can Finally Sell Over State Lines
City-Times Staff
The first state-inspected meat processor, Prairie du Sac-based Wyttenbach Meats LLC, has started shipping meat across state lines under a deal made two years ago.
Meatpacking companies typically aren’t able to ship product across state lines unless their products are inspected by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
But Wisconsin signed a deal in 2011 that makes interstate sales of state- inspected meat acceptable. The new deal was also approved by the USDA.
Wisconsin has just over 270 state-inspected meat plants.
According to the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection many other businesses are interested in following Wyttenbach’s footsteps.
