Apartments Available at Edgewater Manor
By Patrick Lynn
With the future of Edgewater Manor now solely under the city’s purview, the Community Development Authority is now trying to fill it to full occupancy.
The city is now advertising one bedroom apartments with affordable rent at $530 per month with all utilities included, available to persons age 55 and older, with no income limits.
The building currently sits 40 percent vacant in a struggling downtown TIF district. Some residents had cited poor management and lack of cleanliness as a reason for the vacancies. Others have said the apartments are in excellent shape but need better oversight from the city.
The city recently tried selling the building to a private investor, Affordable Senior Housing of Central Wisconsin, but the Stevens Point Common Council voted that sale down, in light of overwhelming public disapproval.
CDA Director Michael Ostrowski said the building needed a complete overhaul, but other leaders said it wasn’t financially feasible for the city to take on the project, and now the apartment complex remains under city ownership.
Edgewater Manor holds 81 income vouchers for fixed- income residents, but is now offering the apartments for residents of any income range. Edgewater Manor is located at 1450 Water Street, which is on the Wisconsin River & Green Circle Trail, on the city bus route, and one block from downtown, the public library, and the Aging & Disability Resource Center (Lincoln Center).
