Welcome to MREA, Our Newest Monthly Contributor
The Midwest Renewable Energy Association (MREA) grew up right here in your backyard! Since 1990 the MREA has been promoting renewable energy and sustainable living through education and demonstration.
A small group of volunteers in Central Wisconsin began MREA by holding an Energy Fair at the Amherst Fairgrounds. This was in response to an article written in the magazine, Home Power, where editor, Richard Perez, suggested that our country needed a renewable energy education event to inform the public about the benefits of renewable energy and to provide a networking opportunity for those already in the field.
The success of that first fair demonstrated the need for an organization dedicated to promoting renewable energy and sustainable living through education and demonstration, and the MREA was born. The early MREA was small enough to fit in a corner the director’s garage. It eventually grew into an Amherst storefront and in 1999 MREA moved to its current headquarters, The Renew The Earth Institute (REI) in Custer, Wisconsin.
The REI serves as office space for MREA staff and a demonstration site for 15 different renewable energy systems. The 20 acre site hosts a variety of energy systems including photovoltaic (solar electric or PV) and solar thermal (solar heating) systems, small wind turbines, a solar electric vehicle charging station, straw bale construction, masonry heater, and campground.
Educational facilities at the Renew the Earth Institute include a conference room, classroom and hands-on lab spaces that bring in renewable energy students from throughout the country. The latest addition to the MREA facilities is The Forest Stage, a venue available for concerts, plays, and films.
Each year the MREA welcomes volunteers for annual events like Move Some Earth Day (early May) and The Energy Fair (third weekend in June). The MREA also partners with like-minded organizations to promote sustainable initiatives.
If your family, business or school is interested in learning more about the MREA you can schedule a tour of the REI or request a renewable energy presentation for your organization. To find out more about MREA go to www.midwestrenew.org, call 715-592-6595, or email to [email protected]
