Ruth L. Johnson, 100
Ruth L. Johnson, age 100, of Stevens Point, died September 15, 2013 at Harmony Living Center while under the care of Heartland Hospice, Stevens Point.
She was born April 17, 1913 to the late Charles and Amelia (Sandau) Peterson in the Town of Lanark. Ruth attended the local grade school and graduated from Amherst High School in 1928. She later attended Stevens Point Teachers College with an emphasis in education.
Ruth married Josef Johnson June 22, 1935. He preceded her in death in 1990 after 55 years of marriage.
Ruth and Josef settled in Milwaukee, WI where Ruth dedicated her life to her family. On March 9th, 1943, a son, Alan was born and on January 17th, 1946, a daughter, Evonne, was born.
In 1948 the family built a new home and moved into the Village of Park Ridge. As a homemaker, Ruth was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aid Society. In her spare time, she enjoyed gardening and canning vegetables. Ruth especially enjoyed cultivating her flower garden.
In the 1960’s, Ruth worked at Normington’s Cleaners to help support her children through college. She was a proud parent and celebrated her son’s graduation in June of 1965 and her daughter’s graduation in June of 1968.
Ruth relished family and welcomed the marriage of her son Alan in 1966 to Sharon. and the marriage of her daughter in 1969 to Richard Weiman Sr. In March of 1973 grandson, Richard Jr. was born and in August of 1976, granddaughter Karen Evonne was born to Evonne and Richard Sr.
In her later years, Ruth enjoyed volunteering at the Lincoln Center and became active with St Paul Lutheran’s Quilting Circle.
Survivors include her son, Alan (Sharon) of Irvine, CA; daughter, Evonne Weiman of Folsom, CA; grandson, Richard Weiman Jr. of Folsom, CA; granddaughter, Karen Evonne; and three great grandchildren, Kevin, Adam, and Lily all of Lincoln, CA. She is also survived by her brother, Walter of Amherst; sister-in-law, Eva Peterson of Antigo; and sister-in-law, Betty Barner of Arvada, CO.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Josef; sisters, Fern Felbinger & Lucille Madsen; and brother, Harold Peterson, and son-in-law, Richard Weiman, Sr.
On her 100th birthday, April 17th, 2013, she was honored by Stevens Point’s Mayor Halvorson who proclaimed that day as “Ruth Louise Johnson Day” for Stevens Point. She also received Birthday Certificates from President Barak Obama, Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker and Wisconsin State Representative Amy Sue Vruwink of the 70th Assembly District. Several days later fifty relatives and friends gathered at Stevens Point’s Holiday Inn for a special 100th birthday luncheon.
A Funeral Service, commemorating her life, will be held 10:30 am, Monday, September 23, 2013 at St Paul Lutheran Church with Rev. Tom Petersen officiating. Visitation will be held Sunday from 2:00pm to 5:00pm at Boston Funeral Home and also on Monday from 9:00 am until time of service at the church. Burial will follow the service in Greenwood Cemetery, Amherst, WI.
