More than 25 natural and cultural history programs will be presented through December at Schmeeckle Reserve, 2419 North Point Drive, Stevens Point.
The first program, set for 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 7, will explore how bats survive in Wisconsin. Other programs will cover diverse topics such as fall colors, poisonous plants, river pigs, and Johnny Appleseed. All programs are free.
The programs are presented as part of a capstone course for environmental education and interpretation students in the UW-Stevens Point College of Natural Resources.
In addition, this fall’s Candlelight Hike Festival will run from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, at Schmeeckle Reserve. Visitors can walk a half-mile or one-mile path over wetland boardwalks lit by torches. “Nature’s Recyclers” is the theme of the event. Crafts and snacks will be available for free. An interactive program featuring woodpeckers, worms, and other decomposers will be presented at the campfire ring at 6:30 and 7:30 p.m.
