Letter: Reader Unhappy With City Council
To the Editor-
In the Stevens Point Journal dated September 30, 2013, on the front page (of the Stevens Point Journal) was an article talking about reducing business 51 from four lanes to two lanes. As a long time resident I remember when we had two lanes on business 51. As Stevens Point population was growing our city mayor and alderpersons change business 51 from two lanes to the current four lanes. Why would our mayor and city alderpersons even consider something so ridiculous?
As a taxpayer and concerned citizens I wrote an e-mail to all 11 Alderpersons (10/01/2013) asking them a simple question. Will you support a two lane or a four lane road on business 51? Please get back to me with your answer. This was not a hard question, just a simple yes or no.
As of Thursday morning October 3, 2013 this is what I received from our elected Alderpersons.
District 1 George Doxtator-no response
District 2 Joanne Suomi-responded “Thanks Bob for your insights”
District 3 Mike O’Meara-responded “Bob’s it’s a little early to say which concept I support because I haven’t seen the plans. That being said a 3 lane concept is worth looking at.”
District 4 Mike Wiza-responded “I can tell you that initially, I do not see the logic in taking the heavily traveled corridor and narrowing it.”
District 5 Mary Stroik-no response
District 6 Jeremy Slowinski- ”Hello Bob, I will not support reducing Business 51 down to two lanes. We are suppose to be moving our city forward not backwards.”
District 7 Roger Trzebiatowski-no response
District 8 Tony Patton – no response
District 9 Randal Stroik-“Thanks for the input. Just wanted to let you know I received this.”
District 10 Mike Phillips- Phone call Response.”I will not support reducing business 51 from four lanes to two lanes, leave the road as is and resurface it.”
District 11 Jerry Moore- no response
I had one suggestion for improving Business 51.Take the stop and go lights from Hefferon Street and business 51 and put them on Minnesota and business 51. Minnesota and business 51 is a dangerous intersection, an accident waiting to happen.
