Editorial: Phillips An Asset to City Council

Editor’s Note: This is the second in our eleven- part series focusing on the most local elected officials in the City of Stevens Point- the Common Council Members. Each week we’ll bring you several stories about each Council Member, to include voting record, quotes and exclusive interviews. To locate your alderperson, or to find out which district you live in, go to www.stevenspoint.com.

With a voting record that is a combination of his personal beliefs and those of his constituents, Alderman Mike Phillips says his first priority is giving a voice to the people.

Phillips is typically present for every committee meeting- even those he does not sit on- and will be the first to admit he doesn’t mind swimming against the stream. His voting record is one of fiscal conservancy, and most recently said the Bus. 51 project is one he has trouble supporting because the Council has such little information on the project, much like the regular public.

It’s a disturbing trend Phillips says he has a hard time reconciling: more so since being reelected in 2012 (Phillips served previously on the Council from 1995-2004) Phillips said the Council seems shut out of important city decisions- at least until the last moment when a vote is necessary.

Because of this mentality, Phillips is a real asset to the Council. Rarely is the man lost for words, though he typically remains quiet for long periods, seemingly considering those words before he speaks.

Phillips is heavily involved in community natural resources issues, to include assisting with the crappie restocking at McDill Pond this past week. He said seeing that pond refilled earlier this year was one of the best moments during his time of City Council.

“Getting that pond filled back up and maintaining that tax structure (of the Lake District), that was a huge issue for me personally,” Phillips said.

Phillips has a sort of grandfatherly gentleness about his personality and a sparkle in his eye. He’s accessible over the phone or in person- and more importantly, he’s approachable and he listens.
