Dorothy was born May 26, 1916 in Wonewoc, WI, the daughter of C.H. and Gladys (Beaty) Babcock. Dorothy’s elementary education was in a rural one room school house in Trempealeau County. Rain or shine, the mud in the spring, and the snow in the winter were quite a challenge.
She loved to spend the day with her father, who was the depot agent for the Green Bay and Western Railroad. Many hours were spent learning the Morse Code in the telegraphy language. Dorothy graduated from Galesville High School in 1934. After graduation, she went to Chicago and was employed by the CEO of the Spiegal May Stearns family as a nanny.
Dorothy married a former classmate Vilas Van Vleet, the couple had two daughters. The family moved to Green Bay, WI Rapids, and Milwaukee, before coming to Plover. The couple divorced in 1949. Dorothy began her career at Sentry Insurance as a supervisor in the statistical department, transposing all written information into numerical form. She married Roman J. Eickendorf in 1953.
The couple owned and operated Eickendorf Floral for 35 years. After retirement, she enjoyed her winters in the Towerpoint Resort in Mesa, AZ. She was a member of the WI Historical Society and a member of the Plover Methodist Church, where she was in the choir for many years. Dorothy kept a daily journal for 69 years!
She is survived by her two daughters: Vicki Borchardt, Plover and Gloria (Jack) Leo, Spring Valley. 6 grandchildren: Sheri (Brian) Mortenson, Mike (Lesley) Wiemann, Eric Wiemann, Gwen (Alan) Dombrowski, Craig (Kelly) Borchardt, and Lee Borchardt. 9 great grandchildren: Nate and Andrew Mortenson, Emily (Andy) Norris, Ilah and Elizabeth Wiemann, Sienna and Aubrey Borchardt, Christine and David Dombrowski.
