Letter: Alderman Upset With Stevens Point Journal

To the Editor-

I ask my friends to not visit the Journal website for a while. They’ve become the “Honey Boo-Boo” of Portage County.

It seems the Journal has tried to stir the pot, and who can blame them, drama sells. It looks like the failed apartment article got more hits on their website, and certainly more comments than anything they’ve come up with in recent history. Their ad prices are based on the number of hits the site gets, so anything to bring in a dollar is going to help.

Their “view” today says that the city dropped the ball and missed out on tons of money, and for no good reason. I know they had a reporter there- didn’t he relay our reasons? Didn’t they watch the video? It goes on to poke the bear, trying to say it is all just a personal attack on anything the Mayor proposes. We all know that it is not true. Many good projects have passed with flying colors. I’ve shaken his hand and congratulated him on several. But, the Journal hopes to generate website hits by playing those cards.

They should know the project was not just about the money, if it were, we could build a casino on the old lullaby site, no need for parking (of course) and it’ll bring truckloads of money to a failing TIF district. They should advocate for a casino, yeah….that’s the ticket.

Finally, they go so far as to ask, or even beg for comments on the article. Again, comments equal dollars. Well, I say we don’t give it to them. Don’t read articles, don’t click links to them. There are other media sources available. Don’t bite that wormed hook.

And if the Journal would like to respond, please comment here.
