Army: Engineers Not Willing to Work With DNR on Gogebic Mine
City-Times Staff
The Army Corps of Engineers says it can’t work with the DNR to complete an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Gogebic Taconite mine in northern Wisconsin.
Members from the Corps testified this year that the state’s new mining law has different requirements from federal rules and the agency was unable to work with the DNR to complete the EIS. Wisconsin law says the EIS must be complete within a year, while the army’s would likely take longer.
According to DNR officials, having to wait for the Corps’ impact statement could delay the permit process for the controversial iron mine proposed by Gogebic Taconite, as the company would be required to have both impact statements before beginning mining work.
