Letter: Downtown Parking Rules Makes No Sense
To the Editor:
After enjoying a night out on the square reflecting on some of my college memories at UWSP, I was amazed to see the number of cars being towed right as the square was closing down. After asking why this was occurring, I was given a very stern response indicating that “no vehicles could be parked on Main Street or in the square after 2:30” despite inadequate signage in the parking areas.
Perhaps city officials expect visitors and patrons of these downtown business will read the out-of-date city ordinances before they patronize these establishments? Perhaps city officials would rather have someone drive home drunk with fear of being towed rather than opting for a safe ride home, or a taxi? Perhaps city officials do not mind encouraging drunken drivers jeopardizing the lives on the road ways out of fear of being towed?
City officials need to be realistic and start thinking progressively rather than regressively and change this ordinance which will encourage people to seek safe rides home without fear of being towed, or fined.
This is especially important in the downtown corridor where 90% of the businesses serve alcohol until 2 am.
