The Village of Plover last week welcomed its first new police officer in four years.
Originally from Amherst, 28 year-old Nathan Shulfer served as a police officer in Fitchburg for 3 years before coming back home.
“I went to Fitchburg because the opportunity opened up, but I’m glad to be back home,” Shulfer said.
Shulfer’s a UWSP graduate who studied political science and broad field social sciences. He says Friday was his third day on the Plover police force- a job which opened only after another officer recently retied.
“It doesn’t happen often, seeing a new face,” said Officer Matthew Tracey, who was training Shulfer on the night shift Friday. “But you always see a bit of turnaround in this job.”
Shulfer will spend a training day with a different officer until learning each aspect of the job. He lives in Plover and is getting married this summer.
