The Nay-osh-ing Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution in Plover held their annual American History Essay Contest, Christopher Columbus Essay and DAR Good Citizens Awards Night at the Charles White Library.
Shannon Moore, State Historian, Chapter American History and DAR Good Citizens Chairman explained how the judges are selected, and the criteria they use to judge the essays. This year there were more participants than usual and a large number of guests attended.
American History Essay Contest: The lives of Children during the American Revolution” was the essay topic for2013 -2014: (Pretend you are a boy or a girl during the colonial fight for freedom. Using historical facts, discuss how the war is affecting your life.) The war dramatically changed the lives of children during the Revolution. Some followed their families into battle; others stayed home and assumed new responsibilities.
All grade 5, 6, 7 and 8 students in a public, parochial school, or those who are home schooled are eligible. One student from each grade is selected as a Chapter winner and receives a pin and certificate. The winners are then forwarded to the State American History Chairman for competition. The state winners receive a monetary award.
Winners: 6th grade: Carolyn Carcy, Kennedy Elementary School, Junction City, and in 8th grade: Shaina Niewiadomski, Rosholt Middle School.
The Good Citizens program is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship, not only in school, but in their communities. The contest is open to all senior class students enrolled in accredited public, private secondary schools in good standing with the State Board of Education. There were three Good Citizen entries: Sawyer Michael Hintz of Amherst High School, Anna Rose Durst of Mosinee High School and Luke Daniel Zimmerman of Loyal High School.
The Christopher Columbus Essay Contest is open to students in grades 9 through 12. The title for this year’s contest was “How Do Americans View Christopher Columbus and George Washington Today?” Both of these men are considered heroes from whose lives Americans can draw beneficial lessons. Students were to discuss the similarities and differences between the ways in which both dealt with and overcame the challenges and adversities they faced.
Hannah Lange, 11th grade Wisconsin Valley Lutheran High School in Mosinee was this year’s Christopher Columbus Essay winner.
Any woman 18 years of age or older, regardless of race, religion or ethnic background who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution is eligible for membership in the DAR.
