County Sheriff’s Association Offers Scholarship Funds

The Portage County Deputy Sheriff’s Association is offering $2,000 in scholarship funds to graduating high school students this spring.

Scholarships are available for students enrolling full-time study at accredited two or four- year colleges. Scholarships will be a minimum of $500 each.

The scholarship(s) are being offered to encourage educational growth for students graduating from a Portage County high school in the spring of 2014. All applicants will be considered but students pursuing careers in criminal justice or community service will be given higher consideration.

Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 or higher and provide a copy of their transcripts.

According to a press release from the Portage Co. Sheriff’s Office, applicants will also need to submit a typed essay explaining the following:

1. What career do you want to pursue, and why?

2. List and explain any extracurricular activities, and/or community activities, in which you were involved while attending high school.

3. Tell us about yourself (hobbies, interests, goals, etc.) In addition:
• Please type your name, address, and telephone number on the first page of your essay;
• Put your name in the top right corner of each additional page;
• Sign and date the last page of your essay.
• There is no minimum or maximum length for essays.
