Criminal charges were filed this week against an accused of lighting his Monroe St. apartment complex on fire.

Roy Strait, 39 of Stevens Point, admitted to law enforcement he doused his apartment with gasoline on the morning of March 4 and then left the residence. He faces charges of 1st degree reckless endangering safety and arson.

Officials from the Stevens Point Police Department say two people were home at the time of the fire but were evacuated by rescuers without injury. Two cats were also rescued.

According to the criminal report, Strait said he started the fire because he wanted to go back to prison.

Strait is being held in the Portage Co. Jail on $100,000 cash bond and will be in court again on March 24.
