Designer, painter and sculptor Hu Hung-Shu will be in residence and give three free, public presentations at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point March 25-27.

Throughout the residency, Hung-Shu will demonstrate his theory of “form follows action” (rather than form follows function), and his own definition of “organic geometry” to create inventive and successfully designed products. The first presentation on Tuesday, March 25, will focus on design work, sculpture, public art and oil painting from 5-7 p.m. in room 221 of the Noel Fine Arts Center.

On Wednesday, March 26, he will work with art students in the Noel Fine Arts Center courtyard from noon until 2:30 p.m., exploring basic design. The last presentation on Thursday, March 27, focuses on Hung-Shu’s organic geometry and form follows action design theories. It will be from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in room 221 of the Noel Fine Arts Center.

His visit is sponsored by the SCULPT student group, Division of Interior Architecture and College of Fine Arts and Communication.

Hung-Shu is a professor emeritus at the University of Iowa, where he headed the Design Department from 1968 until his retirement in 2003. He authored the book “Basic Design: The Cultivation of Wisdom, Reason and Sensibility” in both English and Chinese.
