Stevens Point Police to Hold ‘Run From the Cops’ 5K
By Brandi Makuski
Officials from the Stevens Point Police Officer’s Organization say they’re getting ready to put a productive spin on a criminal’s credo.
Run From the Cops is a nationally- recognized fundraiser for local policeman’s organizations, bringing members of the public together with local law enforcement for a 5K run. Participants receive a t-shirt and free food and awards will be handed out after the race.
The event is in need of sponsors, donations and volunteers, said Sgt. Tony Babl from the Stevens Point Police Department.
“We wanted to do something different,” Babl said. “This kind of event supports our officers but it also supports area youth organizations, which we’ve done a lot of over the years.”
Babl added the department hadn’t yet decided which local youth organizations the fundraiser would benefit, but hopes the event becomes a favorite for residents.
The Police & Fire Commission this week voted to formally support the event, though approval is still required from city leaders as temporary street closings would be necessary.
Officials from SPPD say the event is tentatively scheduled for October 4th, 2014. Registration will be announced at a later date and will cost $25.
The race takes a route through downtown and residential neighborhoods between the courthouse and Bukolt Park.
