For the City-Times

In 2005, ArtsWeek in Portage County was created by the Arts Alliance of Portage County in support of arts and culture events. In 2008, ArtsWeek in April was expanded and recognized as ArtsMonth by the Stevens Point City Council and the Portage County Board of Supervisors.

Events taking place during this month-long celebration of arts and culture include: UWSP’s drama play, Next to Normal, winner of three Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2009 (only the eighth musical in history to win the prize – the last winner being RENT); American Opera Triptych presented by the UWSP Opera Workshop; Festival of the Arts; the Central Wisconsin Prairie Chicken Festival including the Grassland Gala, and the Boomin’ Brewery Bash; Dance Education Center dances for National Water Dance Day with original music written by local musician, Adam Greuel; movie viewings of Switch and  Elemental at the UWSP Dreyfus Center; the Riverfront Arts Center Peeps Art Show;  Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra: Concert IV – Choral Jubilee with the combined voices of the Monteverdi Master Chorale and the Wausau Lyric Choir; modern dance performance featuring Keigwin and Company presented by the UWSP’s Performing Art Series; UWSP senior art work exhibitions; UWSP faculty recital: Brent Turney; Prost! A Salute to German and Viennese Music, the UWSP Soiree Musicale; Tomorrow River Concert Series featuring John Flynn; and Daniel Coyle speaking about his book, The Talent Code.

UWSP recitals and additional music events are listed https://www.uwsp.edu/music/Pages/events.aspx.

These events are just some of the many events taking place this spring as part of the Stevens Point Area Convention & Visitors Bureau’s (SPACVB) Celebrate the Arts campaign.

The campaign, which runs through the end of May, celebrates the wide array of arts-related events and attractions across the Stevens Point area.  The Celebrate the Arts promotion also includes special ticket and lodging packages for visitors, as well as ticket giveaways on the SPACVB’s Twitter and Facebook accounts. Find more information at www.celebratestevenspoint.com
