A Stevens Point man who was arrested Tuesday for jumping bail on charges of sexual assault has been granted bail.
Steven Tibbetts, 32, was first arrested March 6 after an 18 year-old woman accused him of drugging then sexually assaulting her. Several other women came forward with similar accusations after word of Tibbetts’ arrest became public, though how many women is not known. He was formally charged with sexual assault of an unconscious victim and second-degree sexual assault through the use of force on March 17.
Tibbetts had been released on $5,000 bond with conditions he not have any contact with minors or his accusers. He was rearrested Tuesday for breaking those conditions after allegedly approaching one of his victims at Wal-Mart in Plover.
Tibbetts made his video appearance before Judge John Finn Wednesday afternoon and was granted a $2,000 cash bond despite Assistant District Attorney David Knaapen’s request that he be held on a $25,000 cash bond.
Tibbetts posted bail and was released from Portage County Jail around 5 PM Wednesday.
He returns to Branch 3 for his initial appearance before Judge Thomas Flugar on April 7 at 1:30 PM.
