WPS: 26K Customers At Risk for Cut Off
By Donnelly Clare
Heating bills were on this rise this year thanks to the extreme cold, but according to a press release from Wisconsin Public Service nearly 26,000 households are so far behind in their utility bills they could soon face having the lights- and heat- turned off.
Under Wisconsin law utilities cannot be turned off during the winter season, but nearly 26,000 of those residential customers are at least four months behind in their bill and could face utility disconnection unless they make payment arrangements. About 15,000 customers had services disconnected in 2013.
WPS spokesman Kerry Spees said the company doesn’t want to disconnect the electricity, but little choice remains unless customers make payment arrangements.
Customer can make arrangements by calling (866) 215-5812. For customers who need help paying their bill, Energy Assistance can be reached at 715.344.5999.
Wisconsin law prohibits disconnecting residential utilities through April 15.
