UWSP Students Learn to Safely Fell Dead Trees at Country Club
City-Times Staff
While many people are anxious to get in their yards and gardens this weekend, UWSP forestry students will be learning the science of tree felling this weekend.
After spending Friday learning about the procedure in the classroom, they will get hands-on training removing trees from the Stevens Point Country Club property, 16287 Country Club Drive, on Saturday and Sunday.
Les Werner, associate professor of forestry, is teaching this one-credit course. It’s a win-win because students get real world experience, and the Country Club will have dead trees removed.
About 20 students will be trained in the skills necessary to effectively and safely fell standing trees. They will work in small groups with a professional arborist or logger, many of whom are UW-Stevens Point alumni. The OSHA-compliant approach is comparable to an apprenticeship program.
