School Board to See Updates on Life Skills Center
By Donnelly Clare
The Stevens Point School Board on Monday will hear updates on planned construction for the Life Skills Center- plans which were recently approved by the city.
The 3,030 square- foot building will provide an in-home setting along Northpoint Drive where developmentally disabled students can learn independent living skills. Other space inside the center is being reserved for a Blue Light Café- where students can prepare meals for invited members of the community- as well as a space for Threads of Kindness.
District leaders had several false starts when bringing the construction plans before the city, as earlier plans were denied because the initial location of the building was too close to existing taverns on Second Street North. Those plans were reworked and the building moved to the northwest corner of the block next to SPASH.
Members of the school board will later have to consider landscaping, lighting and other elements of the planned construction, which is expected to begin this spring.
