County R Revamp Pushed Back Due to Weather
Leaders from Portage County say reconstruction of County Highway R is ready to resume on Monday, April 21, weather permitting.
The construction was slated to begin April 14 but county leaders opted to delay for a week due to a later winter storm.
According to a press release from Portage County Highway Commissioner Nathan Check, the stretch of roadway between County Highway HH and Porter Road is due for a major overhaul. The work includes reconstructing the existing narrow, two- lane roadway to a four- lane with a landscaped median as well as a five- foot paved shoulder.
Crews will also install a 10-foot wide bicycle and pedestrian path on the west side of the road.
Access roads to Cross Road Commons in Plover- to include Commons Circle (north and south) and Meridian Drive will be closed at County Highway R.
County Highway R will also be completely closed between County Highway HH and Porter Road, including the entire Porter Road intersection until July 18. That date may be changed depending on weather.
The Portage County Highway Department will be posting detour signs directing traffic to County Highway HH, I-39 and County Highway B.
The project is multi-jurisdictional and includes funding from the Village of Plover, Portage County, and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.
The project will consist of Portage County Highway Department completing the grading and storm sewer improvements, followed by the final grading, curb and gutter, asphalt pavement, and restoration completed under a Wisconsin Department of Transportation contract by Sommers Construction.
