Edmund E. Pliska, 87
Edmund E. Pliska, 87, of Plover passed away peacefully at the Edgewater Haven Nursing Home in Port Edwards on Monday, April 28, 2014 surrounded by his loving family.
He was born January 1, 1927 to Frank and Helen (Lesinski) Pliska. He was married to the love of his life, Patricia M. Meyer-Greunke for 42 years.
He was a WWII veteran serving in the United States Marine Corp from 1943 through 1946 in the South Pacific Theatre. Ed fought in Okinawa, Sugar Loaf Hill, and Peleliu and was wounded in the battle at Pavuvu where he earned the Purple Heart Medal. After serving in the USMC, Ed worked at the paper mill followed by working as the groundskeeper at the Stevens Point Country Club. Edmund joined the Copps Corporation honing is career spanning 43 years, retiring as a Sr. Vice President.
Besides loving his work at Copps, Ed especially loved gardening. Creating masterpiece gardens over the years and winning prestigious Garden Club awards. His gardens and koi pond were color palettes sparked by a true love for growing beauty that only Ed seemed to have. A lifetime member of the Marine Corp. League, Ed served at Commandant for two terms. Ed was very active in the Central Wisconsin Marine Corp League until he became ill. He truly was a proud Marine.
Ed was also a lifetime member of the American Legion Plover Post 543, Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Chapter 30 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Plover Post 10262. He was a faithful member of St. Stephens Catholic Church for over 40 years where he served as the Chairman of Finance and Buildings. He currently was a member of St. Bronislava Catholic Church when he became ill. In lieu of flowers a memorial in Edmunds name will be established at a later date. Edmund is survived by his wife Patricia and children Dennis Pliska of Wisconsin Rapids and Shiela (Richard) Schultz of Plover, step-children Rebecca (Charles) Tomek and Don (Jill) Greunke both of Apple Valley, MN. and Gregory (Hsia) Greunke of Zimmerman, MN. Further survived by eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Two sisters, Theresa (Henry) Soik of Stevens Point and Caroline Bungert of Sussex, WI. and many nieces and nephews. Edmund was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Helen Pliska, Brothers Peter, Max, John, Barney and Henry Pliska and a sister Rosemarie Pliska.
Funeral Mass will be 10:30 A.M. Saturday May 3, 2014 at St. Bratislava Catholic Church. Rev. Dennis Lynch officiating. Burial with Military Honors will be in the Guardian Angel Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Friday, May 2, 2014 at the Pisarski Community Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 2911 Plover Road, Plover, and from 9:30 A.M. Saturday at St. Bratislava Church until the time for mass. There will be a Moose Ritual at 6:45 P.M. Friday evening at the funeral home followed by the Parish Rosary at 7:00 P.M.
