The Stevens Point Area Senior High Orchestra will perform its annual spring concert Thursday, May 8 in the SPASH Auditorium.
The concert begins at 7:30 PM. Orchestras from Bannach, Jefferson, and Washington schools will open the show. to the stage to start the evening. The Bannach Elementary Orchestra is under the direction of Paula Butler. Jefferson and Washington school orchestras are directed by Cynthia Kiepert.
Following the elementary groups the SPASH Orchestra will feature senior violinist, Craig Felt, performing Vivaldi’s “Summer from the Seasons” and senior cellist Atticus Plonsky performing a piece called “Julio-O” by Mark Summer, a member of the Turtle Island String Quartet.
The concert also features the debut of three short compositions written by participants in the Very Young Composers project. The project is co-sponsored by the UW-Stevens Point and Stevens Point School district’s music departments. Jacob Schultz, 4th grader at Plover Whiting Elementary School, Andrew White, 4th Grader at Roosevelt Elementary School, and Zoe Sell, 4th Grader at St. Stephen’s Elementary School were selected to have their pieces performed by the SPASH Orchestra.
“These VYC composers have their ideas written down and put into notation by their UWSP music major teaching artists to produce the student’s very own composition,” said Kiepert. “Then, if that’s not enough, they orchestrate the pieces in phase 2 of the program and have the SPASH Orchestra or the Wind Ensemble perform the pieces. I feel very special to be conducting a work written by these children, but I cannot imagine how they must feel standing next to me on stage with their very own score in hand, listening to their music come alive! Hats off to everyone involved in the project.”
The orchestra will close the concert with “Warrior Legacy” by Soon Hee Newbold.
Tickets for the concert are $2 for adults, $1 for students and free for 6 year olds and under.
