Lola Jean (Peterson) Hedquist, age 93, of Stevens Point, died May 1, 2014 at St. Clare’s Hospital in Weston.

Lola was born on Valentine’s Day 1921 to Lorin & Edna (French) Peterson in Iola, WI.

She grew up there, attended the local schools and graduated from Iola High School. She went on to Central State Teachers College in Stevens Point and earned a Bachelor of Science in Primary Education. She taught school four years in Waupaca County and taught 1st grade for 24 years in Stevens Point. Mrs. Hedquist taught many living in our community today how to read.

Lola married John G. Hedquist on June 9, 1945 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Iola. They lived all their married life in Stevens Point. He passed away in 2004.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where she had taught Sunday School & Bible School, was a member of the choir and served on the Altar Guild.

She was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and had served as president of Sigma State Chapter, was a member of WREA, SPARTA (local chapter of retired teachers), and RSVP.

She and her husband John volunteered for Summer Special Olympics. She also volunteered in the Parent to Parent Program. Lola was an avid reader.  She loved working her crossword puzzles and assorted needleworks.

Lola is survived by her sister, Mavis (Peterson) Lewis (Rochester, MN); two sons, John Patrick (Susan) (Fish Creek, WI) and Paul Michael (Margy) (Loveland, CO); and one daughter, Jean Ellen (Steven) Scherer (Stevens Point, WI); 7 grandchildren, David, Alex, Ben, Saul and Seth Hedquist, Andrew and Sarah Scherer; step grandchildren, Emily and Cara Clausen; Zach and Jake Simmons. She is further survived by great-granddaughters Chelsea and Leila Hedquist.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John; and step grandson, Luke Simmons.

A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 am, Wednesday, May 7, 2014, at Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. Steven Olson officiating. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 10:00 am until the time of service at the church. Memorials may be sent to Trinity Lutheran Church or the Stevens Point Area Education Association Foundation. Online condolences may be made at www.bostonfuneralhome.net.
