Edward “Red” Gregory Nowak age 89, of Stevens Point passed away May 12, 2014 at his home, surrounded by his loving family and under the care of Ministry Home Hospice.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Red will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday May 16, 2014 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. Rev. Thomas Lindner will officiate. Private burial will be held at Guardian Angel Cemetery. Friends and relatives will gather to share memories from 4:00 – 8:00 PM on Thursday at the Shuda Funeral Chapel. A general rosary will be prayed for Red at 7:00 PM. Visitation will also be held from 9:00 – 9:45 AM prior to the Mass at the church on Friday.
Red was born March 12, 1925 in Milwaukee, the son of Casmir and Josephine (Michalski) Nowak. The family moved to Edgar and Red graduated from Edgar High School. He married Myrtle “Mertz” Grosskreutz on August 7, 1946 in the Town of Cassel, WI. The couple and extended family moved to Stevens Point in 1950 and opened Nowak’s Bar & Grocery. The business was operated by the Nowak family until 1964 when Red and Mertz took sole ownership, expanded the bar and eliminated the grocery. Together they owned and operated Nowak’s Bar until their retirement in 1977. They hosted many polka parties over the years. Red enjoyed bowling, golf, and softball.
He is survived by his 5 children: Jeffrey (Linda) Nowak, Chippewa Falls; Jerome (Sandie) Nowak, Colgate; Gregory (Robin) Nowak, New Richmond; Jennifer (John) Loehrke, Junction City; James (Lynn) Nowak, Stevens Point. 13 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. His sister Betty Strong, Stevens Point. He was preceded in death by his parents, and later his beloved wife Mertz in 1998.
