The Stevens Point Area Public School Board on Wednesday agreed to rescind its prior vote to non- renew Superintendent Attila Weninger’s contract, instead voting unanimously to accept his resignation.
Weninger had on Monday tendered his resignation but the Board turned it down, instead voting 4-3 in favor of non-renewal of his contract but only after two Board Members left the meeting. Weninger on Tuesday claimed the vote was illegal because a vote to non-renew wasn’t specifically referenced on the meeting agenda, and also said the vote needed a majority of the Board- 5 members- to carry. The vote tally was 4-3.
The Board convened into closed session at about 6:30 PM for nearly 4 hours to determine whether its vote had violated state law. According to a prepared statement read by Board President Angel Faxon the Board’s vote was not illegal.
“After conferring with our legal counsel, no illegal act took place however, our vote on Tuesday, May 14, 2014 was unenforceable,” Faxon said. “The Stevens Point Board of Education has unanimously accepted the resignation of the superintendent. The Board of Education is working together to move the district forward.”
Faxon and other Board Members offered no other comments.
