For the City-Times
The Portage Co. Sheriff’s Office last week held its spring handgun safety course. Despite the chilly weather, many citizens turned out to learn about handgun safety, practice their shooting skills, and interact with the Sheriff and some of his deputies. We received a lot of positive feedback, and appreciate everyone turning out.
The next Handgun Safety Course will be offered on October 25th, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Portage County Law Enforcement Range in the Town of Dewey. Topics for this class will include shooting stance, grip, sight picture, loading, unloading, malfunctions, and firing. Students will need to bring a firearm and 50 to 100 rounds of ammunition for their firearm. The cost for this course is $25 per student.
The Handgun Safety Course will be held the afternoon of the fall Concealed Carry Weapon (CCW) Class. This class is taught by Sheriff’s Deputies who are certified Department of Justice firearms instructors. This class is the actual Department of Justice CCW class developed for the CCW permit application. This class will be held on Saturday, October 25, 2014, from 8:00 am to Noon at the Portage County Annex Building, Conference Rooms 1 & 2. The cost of the class is $40/student.
Students taking both the CCW class and Basic Handgun Course will be charged a total of $50 per student. For more information, go to http://www.co.portage.wi.us/sheriff/admin-records/ccw-class.html.
