Layout FlagLeonard J .(John) Bartkowiak, 73, of 317 Washington Avenue in Stevens Point died peacefully at his home on Tuesday May 20, 2014. 

Leonard was born May 5, 1941 in Stevens Point. He was the son of the late Julian and Rose (Helminiak) Bartkowiak. He attended St. Peters Grade School and graduated from Pacelli High School in 1959.

He entered the United States Army on December 12, 1963 in Milwaukee, WI. He served as a SP4 in the EUSA Sig. Co. in Korea. Leonard was trained to operate and monitor field radios for carriers and associated equipment. He was honorably discharged on November 16, 1965. Leonard worked at Joerns Brothers Furniture Co. before entering the Army, upon his discharge he worked for Consolidated Papers for a period of time before working for the United States Postal Service retiring in 1995.

Leonard enjoyed reading, fishing, traveling and sports especially the Brewers. His favorite pastime was spent being with his family, nieces and nephews. Survivors include one brother Dave Bartkowiak of Stevens Point, many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Leonard was preceded in death by his siblings, Hedwig, Sophie, George, Alfred, Dennis, Jerome and Raymond. In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in Leonard’s name at a later date.

Funeral Mass will be 10:30 A.M. Friday, May 23, 2014 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church. Rev. Arul Joseph Visuvasam officiating. Burial will be in the Guardian Angel Cemetery at a later date. Family and friends may call from 9:30 A.M. Friday morning at the St. Faustina room of St. Peters Church until the time for mass.
