Stevens Point Man Faces Judge for Iverson Assault
By Patrick Lynn
One of two men arrested in connection to a group assault at Iverson Park this week faces charges of aggravated battery.
Auston Ortiz, 18 of Stevens Point, is currently being held in the Portage Co. Jail on a probation violation. Judge John Finn on Friday set a $15,000 cash bond for Ortiz on the battery charge.
Authorities say Ortiz is only one of several men who were involved in a group attack against two men at Iverson Park on Memorial Day shortly before 6 PM. Police had originally said only one man was attacked, but on Wednesday Chief Kevin Ruder said not all the witnesses are cooperating and the investigation is still ongoing.
According to Portage Co. Assistant District Attorney Cass Cousins, Ortiz along with several other men targeted two specific men at the park on Monday. Cousins said one of the men, who was beaten with a wood mallet and fists, has facial fractures requiring surgery and needed nearly 20 staples for his injuries.
Ortiz returns to court for an initial appearance on June 9.
