DAR Holds Annual Picnic
For the City-Times
Nay-osh-ing Chapter, Plover, Daughters of the American Revolution held its annual picnic at Worzella Park in Plover.
Doris Dahlke, honorary chapter regent, presented a program on the history of the American flag in keeping with Flag Day.
On June 14, 1777, in order to establish an official flag for the new nation, the Continental Congress passed the first Flag Act. “Resolved, that the flag of the United States be made of thirteen stripes, alternate red and white, that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new Constellation.”
Between 1777 and 1960, Congress passed several acts that changed the shape, design and arrangement of the flag and allowed for additional stars and stripes to be added to reflect the admission of each new state.
Today the flag consists of 13 horizontal stripes, seven red alternating with six white. The stripes represent the original 13 colonies, the stars represent the 50 states of the Union. The colors of the flag are symbolic as well: Red symbolizes hardiness and valor; white symbolizes purity and innocence; and blue represents vigilance, perseverance and justice.
She also provided each person with a flag and a copy of “Flag Etiquette: Standards of Respect,” which included The Flag Code; Displaying the Flag Outdoors; Raising and Lowering the Flag; Displaying the Flag Indoors, Parading and Saluting the Flag; The Salute; The Pledge of Allegiance and National Anthem; and The Flag in Mourning.
Trees from home: Again this year, Nay-osh-ing will be supporting Christmas packages to soldiers serving overseas. Doris Dahlke, vice regent, distributed 240 artificial trees to be decorated. She reported that so far 95 caps (wool helmet liners) have been made to be included in the boxes.
The cost for mailing one box is $30, and we are looking for donations to fund this project. If you are interested please send your contribution to Doris Dahlke, 3070 W. State 153, Mosinee, WI 54455.
Any woman 18 years of age or older, regardless of race, religion or ethnic background who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution is eligible for membership in the DAR.
