Extra Extra: Rafters Drop Marathon Heartbreaker
For the City-Times
Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.- It was a game of missed opportunities for the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters (9-21) who fell in 12 innings to the Green Bay Bullfrogs (12-17) by a score of 6-5. The Bullfrogs had more runs than hits as they took advantage of some Rafters miscues.
Rafters’ starter Zach Jackson (Arkansas) lasted one inning as he threw 37 pitches in the frame, allowing one unearned run to score as he also walked 3 batters. Both teams had a parade flowing out of their bullpens as 13 combined pitchers were used. It was a back and forth affair as the Rafters chased Green Bay starter Luke Watson (UW-Stevens Point) after 4.2 innings pitched.
Wisconsin Rapids had their opportunities to keep the game from going into extras as they stranded 14 runners in the contest. 5 Rafters’ errors were also costly as 3 of the 6 runs scored by Green Bay were un-earned.
The Rafters grabbed the lead late in the top of the 12th when Woody Woodward (UC Santa Barbara) dribbled a single up the third base line to score Taylor Propst (Alabama). Jeff Gogue (Cal State Dominguez Hills) would come on to record the save. With runners on first and second, Gogue went to two strikes on cleanup hitter Ryan Howell (Chabot College). Howell, who had been 1-17 in the series prior to his final at-bat, laced a double down the line that would score the tying and winning runs for Green Bay.
Wisconsin Rapids will look to rebound tomorrow evening as they hit the road again to take on the La Crosse Loggers. First pitch is at 7:05 pm CST.
