North Central Region Road Construction Update

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) provides a weekly update on road construction in North Central Wisconsin, which includes: Adams, Green Lake, Florence, Forest, Iron, Langlade, Lincoln, Marathon, Marquette, Menominee, Oneida, Portage, Price, Shawano, Vilas, Waupaca, Waushara, and Wood counties.
Construction-related traffic impacts are subject to change and are dependent on favorable weather conditions and construction status.
Adams County
Highway: WIS 21 (*updated*)
Location: WIS 13 (Adams County) and Third Lane (Waushara County)
Schedule: May 27 to July 25, 2014
Cost: $3 million
Description: Crews will mill the existing roadway and replace it with new asphalt. Crews will also install centerline rumble strips, replace beam guard, widen the paved shoulders and install new signing and pavement markings.

Description: Crews will reconstruct WIS 23 from WIS 49/County A to Arcade Glen Road.

Traffic impacts:
- WIS 23 (WIS 49/County A to Arcade Glen Road (Ripon)) is detoured via County A, County K, County KK, and WIS 44/49. This detour will be in place until August 15.
- WIS 23 (County A to WIS 49) will be detoured via WIS 73, County K, and County A starting Monday, July 28.
- The Puchyan River Bridge (WIS 23) will be closed to all traffic starting Monday, July 28.
- The WIS 49/County A intersection will remain open to traffic with a four-way stop during all stages of construction.
- Local access to properties and businesses will be maintained.
Lincoln County
Highway: WIS 107
Location: Tug Lake Creek
Schedule: June 30 to August 15, 2014
Description: Crews will replace culvert pipe.
Traffic impacts: During construction, WIS 107 will remain open to a single lane of traffic with temporary traffic signals.

Marathon County

Location: Bridges over Porky Creek (Abbotsford) and the Big Eau Pleine River (Marathon City)

Traffic impacts: WIS 29 will remain open to traffic. Motorists can expect to encounter single lane closures on westbound WIS 29.

Location: Sunrise Drive to Business 51
Schedule: April 29, 2014 to May 25, 2017
Cost: $18.8 million
Description: Crews will replace the pavement on eastbound and westbound WIS 29 and replace the bridge decks of the structures located over the Wisconsin River and Business 51. Crews will also raise the Sunrise Drive overpass and repair the overpass’ bridge deck.

The Sunrise Drive overpass is closed until August 1, 2014. No detour will be posted. Access to businesses and residences will be maintained.

Schedule: April 28, 2014 to early October 2014

Description: Crews will mill the existing pavement and replace it with new asphalt. The existing lighting system will be replaced, bicycle accommodations will be provided and the existing corrugated median will be removed.

Traffic impacts:
- Beginning the morning of Wednesday, July 16, both inside lanes of Business 51 will be closed between Sturgeon Eddy Road and Division Street.
- The following side roads along Business 51 will remain open during construction: Kent Street, Weston Avenue, Sturgeon Eddy, Townline Road, Single Avenue, Luebner Street, and East Thomas Street. Beginning the morning of Wednesday, July 16, the remaining side roads between Townline Road and Division Street will be closed to traffic. The closures are necessary for crews to repair the existing concrete pavement.
- Motorists can expect to encounter one lane in each direction between Kent Street and Townline Road.

Location: Marathon County U and K/Business 51 interchange, Wausau
Schedule: April 1, 2013 to late November 2014

Traffic impacts:
- US 51 traffic is shifted to use the adjacent temporary roadway on the northbound side of US 51. This shift will last through July.
- The speed limit on US 51 is reduced to 55 MPH between Bridge Street and Decator Drive.
- Motorists on US 51 can expect to encounter single lane closures.
- Northbound US 51 traffic, exiting to County K/Business 51, is detoured via the northbound US 51 off-ramp to County U, and Merrill Avenue/County U.
- The eastbound and westbound lanes of County K (Business 51) under the US 51 bridges are closed until early October 2014. During the closure, traffic is detoured via County U and Overlook Drive.
- The on-ramp to southbound US 51 from County K is closed until early October 2014.
- The on-ramp to northbound US 51 from County K (Business 51) and the southbound US 51 off-ramp to County K (Business 51) will remain open to traffic.
Marquette County

Location: Adams County line to I-39, town of Douglas
Schedule: June 9 to July 29, 2014
Description: Crews will mill the existing pavement and replace it with new asphalt. Crews will also replace beam guard, install cross drains and install new signing and pavement markings.
Traffic impacts: WIS 23 will remain open to traffic. Motorists can expect to encounter flagging operations.

Description: Crews will complete bridge maintenance on the northbound I 39 bridges over Neenah Creek, County O, WIS 23/County P, County CX, and WIS 23/County P. The Grouse Drive bridge over I 39 will be raised to meet current design and safety standards.

Oneida County

Location: Between US 8 (Monico) and WIS 32 (Three Lakes)
Schedule: June 2 to July 23, 2014
Description: Crews will mill the existing pavement and replace it with new asphalt. Crews will also replace beam guard, install anti-skid surface to the bridge over the railroad and replace all signing and pavement markings.
Traffic impacts: US 45 will remain open to traffic. Motorists can expect to encounter temporary signals at the bridge over the railroad (north of Oneida County C), and lane closures using flagging operations.

Location: Old Hwy 70 (Minocqua) to 3rd Avenue (Woodruff)
Schedule: March 31 to late August 2014

Description: Crews will reconstruct the intersections of WIS 70 west and County J to include additional turn lanes and new traffic signals; install new street lighting; reconstruct the roadway with new asphalt pavement and curb and gutter, replace storm, sanitary and water lines.

- Crews will continue to work on the local and county systems in the Minocqua/Woodruff area throughout July and August.

Location: Shawano County S and Highview Road (Pulaski)
Schedule: July 21 to late August 2014
Description: Crews will mill 2.88 miles of the existing roadway and overlay it with new asphalt. Crews will also remove and install culvert pipes.
Traffic impacts: WIS 55/160 will remain open to traffic during construction. Motorists can expect to encounter single lane closures and flagging operations during daylight hours.

Traffic impacts: WIS 156 will re-open by the end of the day Friday, July 11. Beginning Monday, July 14, at 7 a.m., crews from Wisconsin Central Ltd plan to close WIS 156 between WIS 187 and WIS 47 to reconstruct a railroad crossing in the town of Navarino. Traffic will bedetoured via WIS 187, County F and WIS 47 until 5 p.m. Friday, July 18.
Vilas County

Cost: $2.48 million
Schedule: May 12 to July 22, 2014
Description: Crews will mill and overlay 15.3 miles of US 51. Crews will also replace or re-line some culvert pipes, repair and add an anti-skid surface to the approaches and bridge deck to Spider Lake, install rumble strips and widen the shoulders.
Traffic impacts: US 51 will remain open to traffic during construction. Motorists can expect to encounter single lane closures with flagging operations or traffic signals.
Waupaca County

Location: Bridge over the Little Wolf River
Schedule: July 1 to July 22, 2014
Description: Bridge repairs.
Traffic impacts: WIS 110 will remain open to traffic. Motorists can expect to encounter temporary traffic signals at the bridge.
Waushara County

Motorists are reminded to drive with caution in the work zone and should be prepared to encounter slow moving trucks. Motorists should slow down, use caution and stay alert when driving through construction zones. To avoid delays, consider taking an alternative route and avoid peak travel periods.
