Throwback Thursday: On This Date in 2013…
*Editor’s Note: People love the feeling of nostalgia. Keeping our history close at hand is part of what makes us who we are today and shapes many of our decisions. But as the old saying goes, those who don’t know history are destined to repeat it. It’s why we’re joining in the “Throwback Thursday” trend: each week we’ll randomly chose a top story from that date in a previous year. It could be a story which is relevant to current events, or it might be something completely random, but in any case it will help put local news into a greater context. We find this week’s Throwback Thursday story about two local car thieves busted thanks to a local resident. A brief look back at what happened on July 17, 2013-

Stevens Point Police Tuesday arrested two men in connection with a theft.
18 year-old suspects Michael R. Stolz and Ian M. Rosebrook were identified by a Stevens Point woman who wishes to remain anonymous. Police say the woman witnessed the two men appearing to steal items from a vehicle on the 600 block of Union Street shortly after midnight.
Police also credit the women with yelling at the men, who ran from the scene. They were picked up shortly afterward.
The suspects admitted to going “car shopping” in the area entering and removing items from several vehicles. Police recovered several GPS units, sunglasses and an IPOD. All vehicles entered were left unlocked with valuables inside.
The Stevens Point Police is commending the citizen witness for calling the police and will be awarded a Police Department Recognition Coin. She will be formally recognized, along with other coin recipients, at a ceremony later this year.
Police are urging citizens to keep their vehicles secure and valuables out of sight. Residents should also call law enforcement when they observe suspicious activities in their neighborhoods.
In a statement released by the Stevens Point Police Department, Sgt. Tony Babl said, “through police/community partnerships, together we can make a difference.
Anyone with any information about the thefts from vehicles should call 715-346-1518.
