CrossFit Stevens Point presented a check for $175, along with an additional $105 in contributions from individual CrossFit athletes, and more than 200 pounds of supplies to the Portage County Humane Society on behalf of CrossFitters for a Cause, a group sponsored by the local fitness facility (known as a ‘box’).
Funds and donated supplies were generated by the box’s athletes through a month-long supply and Facebook check-in drive. A group within the larger CrossFit Stevens Point (CFSP) community, CrossFitters for a Cause provides athletes an opportunity to harness the positive energy within the box to give back to the greater community. CrossFitters for a Cause (www. crossfittersforacause. com) was founded by coach John Gildenzoph and athlete Heather Bidwell.
During the last seven months, CFSP’s CrossFitters for a Cause has assisted a number of organizations, including the Salvation Army (providing food and manpower once a month); Central Waters Farmshed; the Take a Step 5K benefiting CAP Service’s Family Crisis Center; and the Ignite Born Learning Trail. The box also raised more than $1,500 for the Lone Survivor Foundation and contributed more than 500 pounds of food and supplies to Operation Boot Strap.
“A large part of what we do here is push our athletes to set goals and accomplish things they never thought they could achieve,” said CrossFit owner Scott Keyser “Clearly, we have an ambitious community that not only accomplishes things inside the box, but in our community outside the box as well. It is an honor to be able to encourage our athletes to give back, and to see them rise to that challenge.”
Throughout July CFSP will be collecting items for Project Fresh Start, serving as a drop off site and volunteering time to prepare supplies students will utilize for the upcoming 2014-2015 school year.
