Letter: Reader Unhappy With Editorial on Sheriff’s Candidate
Editor’s note- the following editorial was not solicited by City-Times staff.
To the Editor-
I am writing in response to the endorsement of Kevin Sorenson by the Stevens Point Journal Media Editorial Board. It seems rather inappropriate for this four member board to endorse a candidate for a Portage County election when three of them live in Marathon County and the remaining board member lives in Wood County.
As many readers of the Stevens Point Journal probably know, the Journal is no longer Stevens Point or Portage County centric. The Gannett- owned paper we get is a blend of news from Marathon, Wood, Portage and Fox Valley communities as well as national news provided by a wire service. The board members don’t live or work here. That said, what is their motivation or qualification for endorsing any candidate in Portage County?
Want proof ? A look at the August 5th Marshfield News Herald will show you a lengthy editorial piece entitled “Voter’s Guide to Longshot Candidates” authored by SPJ Media Board member Robert Mentzer.
Finally, in arguing Sorenson’s merits as a leader, they indicate that some of his best qualifications would be “a continuation of Charewicz’s administration” …as in maintaining the status quo… and “would be less likely than some other candidates to seek innovative ways of doing law enforcement”.
Considering the economic times we live in and constant new challenges presented to law enforcement, I would consider such remarks the opposite of an endorsement. Innovation is necessary for continuing improvement in any organization.
I would think that supporters of all four candidates should be as offended as I am, and I believe the voters of Portage County are smart enough to vote for their candidate of choice without the influence of this particular editorial team.
