Q Artists to Feature New Exhibit
For the City-Times
This fall will bring a new featured exhibit to Q Gallery. “Bowls” by Jen Selwyn will be ready for viewing on September 9th. The show will remain in place through November 1, and the artist reception which is open to the public will be held on Friday night, September 12, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM.
Selwyn is a ceramics artist who has lived in Stevens Point for the past eight years and has become known for her leaf bowls. While she will have leaf bowls in this show, the majority of the bowls will be less decorative and more functional. She is trying some new shapes and sizes as well as some new glazes. Since she began making pottery she has been drawn to bowls, looking at them, touching them, and feeling their graceful curves. She decided to do this show just about bowls to show off their grace and beauty.
Additionally, Selwyn has been involved for several years in the Empty Bowls project in Stevens Point and began a project herself a couple years ago called Facing Hunger bowls. These bowls have a face and a name, to represent one of the 3,030 children who went hungry in Portage County in 2011. She says, “My goal is to make 3,030 of these bowls and that by the time I get to that number, my hope is there will be no more hungry children in our county.” These bowls are different because they are pinch pot bowls which take much longer and are also highly decorated. Each of these bowls will be $55 with $20 going to hunger prevention. She will also donate 20% of all other bowl sales from this show to hunger prevention programs in our area.
