County HR Committee Approves Insurance for Domestic Partners
Now on to Full Board for Discussion, Vote
By Patrick Lynn
The Portage Co. Human Resources Committee has approved extending insurance benefits to domestic partners of county employees.
County leaders agreed to extend the coverage after several area residents attended to voice their support for the move. The county had postponed talks on the issue last year as it waited for the state Supreme Court’s decision on whether it would strike down or uphold a state law which offers some benefits to domestic partners. That law was upheld.
Officials in the City of Stevens Point opened up coverage to domestic partners- heterosexual and same-sex- last year. So far, only one individual has taken advantage of the coverage, according to city documents.
The matter now moves on to the full County Board on Sept. 16.
