County Agrees to Meeting on Library Lease
By Sara Marls
Officials from Portage County have agreed to a meeting with the City of Stevens Point to negotiate terms for the public library.
The meeting, which has not yet been scheduled, will be the first between city and county officials on the library lease. The two groups have until recently met separately and in closed session.
The city has offered county leaders the opportunity to move the library to other locations, as well as vacating property owned by the county in exchange for city offices moving into the current library building.
The county has countered those offers with an option to extend the current lease for another 10 years and pay for capital improvements agreed upon by a team consisting of both city and county officials.
City Council members in September agreed to create a negotiating team comprised of Mayor Andrew Halverson, City Attorney Andrew Beveridge, City Comptroller-Treasurer Corey Ladick, and council members Mike O’Meara, Jerry Moore and Mike Phillips.
